		<description><![CDATA[<p>You are invited to celebrate the release of Trash Animals: How We Live With Nature&#8217;s Filthy, Feral, Invasive and Unwanted Species with a celebration and reading by Kelsi Nagy and Phillip David Johnson II (the editors of the collection) who will be joined by writer and professor Jeffery Allan Lockwood (a contributor to the collection). Readings will feature so-called trash animals&#8211;carp, prairie dogs, prairie lubber grasshoppers and more!</p>
<p>Festivities begin at 7 p.m. at the Bean Cycle Coffee Shop (144 N College Avenue) on Thursday, May 23rd.</p>
<p>Why are some species admired or beloved while others are despised? In Trash Animals, a diverse group of environmental writers explores the natural history of wildlife species deemed filthy, unwanted, invasive, or worthless, highlighting the vexed relationship humans have with such animals. Each essay focuses on a so-called &#8220;trash species&#8221;&#8211;gulls, coyotes, carp, cockroaches, magpies, prairie dogs, and lubber grasshoppers, among others&#8211;examining the biology and behavior of each in contrast to the assumptions about them. By establishing maligned creatures&#8217; unique place in the contemporary landscape and in our imagination, the contributors challenge us to look closely at these organisms, to reimagine our ethics of engagement with them, and to question the violence with which we treat ... <a href="http://www.wolverinefarm.org/trash-animals/">Read More &#187;</a>]]></description>
