Craft Chat! Narrative Arts: Subversive Structures
Join us for an afternoon with our March Writer in Residence, Sue Ring deRosset, as she discusses the art of the narrative.
What does an author’s choice of book structure say about how people change and how the human world works? We’ll review some conventional structures—including “Freitag’s pyramid” and the “hero’s journey,” as co-opted by Hollywood and many novel genres—and examine their use in a couple of novels and memoirs. Then we’ll look at some alternative structures in published works . . . The goal is to interrogate and experiment with the structure of the books we’re writing to say something via the presentation of the story that’s in alignment with our own emerging values—and even perhaps to speak back to power with how we tell our stories.
