County Convention & Grassroots Farm Policy
September 23, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

What is County Convention?
Every chapter of Rocky Mountain Farmers Union (RMFU) hosts a County Convention to propose, discuss, and vote on policy. LCFA will submit our policies for State Convention this November. At this gathering we’ll discuss and brainstorm policies and then work together to draft policies to bring to RMFU State Convention.
Check out the RMFU Policy book before the meeting! https://www.rmfu.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/2019-Policy-Manual-Natl-CO-NM-WY-final.pdf
What happens to the policies that we vote on?
Delegates from LCFA bring the policies passed at County Convention (and others can be brought later) to State Convention. At State Convention, the policies brought by all chapters are discussed, debated, revised, compromised on, voted down or voted into RMFU Colorado policy and RMFU National policy. National delegates will then take RMFU national policy to National Farmers Union (NFU) Convention in March. The policies in RMFU and NFU state and national policy then directly influence how RMFU and NFU lobby on legislation, especially at the state and national level. The point to take home about this is that we, in our chapter, get to create policy that has the potential to influence legislation. This is grassroots work.
What kind of policy?
Most importantly, policy that affects you as a farmer and that affects our local food system. However, RMFU policy is wide in scope, and there is policy to develop and write on immigration, health care, public lands and much more.
How can I be a delegate to RMFU State Convention?
You must attend County Convention or another policy meeting to be a delegate, and be an RMFU member. If you’re interested, sign up at County Convention. State Convention is in Greeley November 22nd and 23rd. The Innovation Fair is a free event on Nov. 21st the day before State Convention that everyone is encouraged to attend.
