Social Justice Book Club
March 19 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm
With the United States as divided as ever, the Social Justice Book Club is an opportunity to put aside differences, listen to new perspectives and learn about shared societal challenges.
In SJBC, we offer an inclusive space for collaborative learning on important social justice issues, as well as provide a venue from which we can share ourselves and learn from our peers’ experiences.
We are an assembly of folks that love to learn, that are passionate about making the world better for everyone and are open to authentically sharing our experiences. We believe that more is learned from listening than talking and that everyone has a valuable perspective. What is said at our meetings stays there, but what is learned leaves the space to make a positive impact.
At each monthly gathering, we focus our conversation on a set of media including film, books, podcasts and/or articles. Topics vary each meeting but regardless of the content, the conversation aims to critically analyze the media as well as our personal experiences with the subject matter. Attendees are welcome to make media suggestions at each meeting.
While SJBC is open to the public, here are some guidelines for our conversation:
Be respectful, authentic, forthcoming and vulnerable.
Assume good intentions from your peers.
Listen to understand — not to convince.
Challenge ideas, not people.
It’s fine to disagree but do so with curiosity and not hostility.
